working User Generated patch for Steams broken sound patch
Found this over on the steam forum http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=924277&page=3 Crusty spot posted this fix for the latest steam update that ate everyones sound. Tried it and it worked. Thanks dude. Downloaded the patch here http://drop.io/fixdefensegrid Had to rename it to an exe(from txt) file and copy it into the C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\defensegridtheawakening folder Had steam running, and auto updates for Defensegrid off. It installed, no virus or trojan that I could detect. So far no system problems, fingers crossed. Started up the game, and hey presto I had wonderful music coming out my speakers instead of nothingness. Could not get on to the steam site to thank you CrustySpot. So I thank you here. Well done man.

Incomplete Update on Friday, Fixed on Tuesday

By now, you likely know what took place.  The update we put on Steam only partially downloaded to players from Friday through Tuesday, and for some people they just lost audio, for other people the game didn't work at all.

The fact that anything worked at all  is surprising since you had some files from one version of the game mixed with files from the latest version of the game.

Additionally, we did a couple of things we shouldn't have done - first we put out the update on a Friday - a true no-no that we should have avoided as we have in the past, but we were simply too confident that this update was benign and was going to be a positive experience.

Secondly, we at the last minute got the opportuntiy to show Defense Grid XBLA at Comic-Con in San Diego over the weekend and we were AFK for most of the time until Tuesday.

Two wrongs - don't release on Friday and then don't live offline for the days that follow.

For those two things I greatly apologize on behalf of Hidden Path Entertainment.

Fortunately, the fix was quickly determined (people weren't getting all of the update) and remedied (full update now downloading) on Tuesday, and all should be good in the world now (including world peace I've been told).

Thanks so much for your patience and support through this.  We screwed up, but hopefully now you have a better game experience.

Defend the Cores!

Jeff

Thanks for This...

I worked for my system as well, and I can now play again. It was so frustrating to play in silence that I simply haven't been playing since the update messed things up. UPDATE: Thanks to Steam turning my "automatic updates" back on it -re-updated my game, and now the sound is gone again. So Sad!

me too

WTF did steam re-enable auto updates!?!?!

New Patch

Note that the temporary rollback patch won't work with anything other than the broken update they sent out over the weekend. If they've updated it since then, the rollback won't work. It helped out folks over the weekend, so hopefully the patch they came out with today will take care of the issue.

patch has me hearing again

thanks crustyspot dude. patch does the job for me. as long as I can keep on keeping on ... master strategist here i come

IT DID NOT WORK. I went to

IT DID NOT WORK. I went to the properties and set the option to not automatically update. Applied the patch and when i launched the game it updated again?? Somehow steam did not believe I meant it. Anyway, the sound was still broken and the fix does not want to reinstall because it says it already has.......:( You only get one shot at this, I really hope the developers crack this one SOON!

WTF Steam, I have Shadow Copy bhaa

I see that there is news that a new offical patch is out. I had the same problem as you. New steam update this morning for the steam client, checked to make sure the game did not update, it had been reverted back to autoupdate. Told it NO!!!! Do not update. 4hrs later. Came out of the game and there it is trying to update. Ran the user patch, told me no files need updating. What kind of crapware are you pushing Steam? It's almost as if you want users that appiled the CrustySpot rollback to lose sound again in some sort of don't mess with us attitude. Solution, ran Vista(32bit) shadow copy, to restore the folder to version I had 4hrs previously. Hey presto, sound again. Actually I had to copy and paste the files from the shadow copy, as a restore option did not show up. Made another backup copy of these files in case I need them. Why is Steam still pusing this update? Surely they know the damage it is doing? By Sunday they should have pulled the plug on it. where was the testing? Release a patch beofre the wkend, with no testing. A patch that you no CHOICE but to download. Even MS aint that bad.

same here, still updates

same here, still updates even when told not to. however: From Developer: Recent Steam update sound issue - Currently under investigation Submitted by Sphinx on Tue, 07/28/2009 - 17:36. Defense Grid - Technical Support Hello Everyone! We are aware that an audio issue (audio seems to disappear) has arisen with the latest patch released to Steam. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused, and wanted to let everyone know that resolving this is our top priority. We are hoping to get something out within the next day or two, and will keep everyone updated. Thanks for your patience! * Sphinx ** Associate Producer

This fix works!

I just bought the game yesterday 7/26/09 after beating the demo and the game came with no sound. I never had the original version of the game since I purchased it after the patch had already come out. I can confirm that applying the above file will bring back, or give you sound!!! THIS FIX WORKS! (excited)

Rollback patch

Just to ease everyone's mind, this just rolls back the updated Steam content to the original content that was backed up prior to the update. There's no wizardry involved, and credit goes to clickteam.com's excellent patch maker. It creates a file based on the differences between two folders. It's important to turn off automatic updates for the Defense Grid game in Steam (until an official announcement) by right clicking the game and choosing properties. You don't have to copy the rollback patch to the Steam folder mentioned above, you can run it from anywhere, but you'll have to select the above defensegrid folder once the patch has launched. Sorry about the renaming .txt to .exe issue. That must be a drop.io thing. Enjoy, and let's keep our eyes peeled for an official patch. Good luck Hidden Path, we all love the game! -CS
