The problem with editors = a lot of CRAPPY maps to choose from.
If Hidden path makes sets of pre-made aliens that will come onto the map rather then players choosing what attacks then this could help keeping maps fair. Last thing I want is to download a map and find the first wave is 200 boss aliens when I have only $200 to spend. GG.
Also, if Hidden Path does make a pre-made selection of aliens to use on the maps then maybe players could still do their own alien waves-per-turn however the maps made would be marked as so. This way people downloading new maps could take the chance on user maps or go for one thats been made with pre-made waves.
To make myself more clean on "pre-made alien waves". If you make a map you then get to choose what type of attack you will get on the map. A choice could be:
"Land only attack - 20 waves"
"Land only attack - 30 waves"
"Land only attack - 40 waves" etc
"Land + Air attack - 20- waves"
"Land + Air attack - 30 waves"
"Land + Air attack - 40 waves"etc
I say this because it takes a lot of play testing to get a level right. One wave might be easy then the next ultra hard and from my experience most people don't seem to play test their levels enough to release them to the general public.
Also everyones skill is different in this game. What you might find easy others find impossible.
As an easier alternative, you can release the file format specification to encourage a community driven map editor. (assuming the file ormat is nothing to be ashamed of).
btw: I really enjoyed the game, but I do think a map editor can make it a hit of much greater scale.

editor, or a free play mode
Defense Grid Editor?
I assume you are asking about a map editor for Defense Grid. It's definitely something we'd like to do in the future.
