Game locks up with music still playing
I recently installed the Resurgence map packs and have had serious issues with the game locking up during play. The specific timing is pretty random in terms of what point in playing a map this occurs, but the behaviour is always the same, in that all rendering locks up but the music audio continues. I've tried checking the usual suspects which I've listed below. 1. Installed the latest video drivers (Nvidia 258.96). 2. Confirmed I have the latest version of DirectX suitable for my card (9.0C) 3. Confirmed I only have one audio device installed (Realtek AC97) using the latest drivers supplied by the motherboard manufacturer (Gigabyte). 4. Carried out a complete Windows Update My setup is as follows. CPU: 3Ghz dual core (D930) Video: Card 8800GT RAM: 2GB Audio: AC97 on motherboard OS: XP Pro (all service packs installed) I hadn't been playing Defence Grid for a few months (since the release of the previous DLC) and that was a video driver update and OS reinstall ago, but I've not had these kind of lock up problems before today. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks.

Re: Game locks up with music still playing

Hi PI,

Good effort on trying to fix it.  The next test I'd do is removing the side panel of the computer and/or downloading a GPU temp meter and watching the GPU temp to see if your video card is overheating.  Strategy games with lots of units like ours or even that big one that just came out often come with reports of GPUs overheating because fans aren't as efficient or cases aren't as cool as people had hoped.  Another clue is that rendering locks and audio continues - that tends to be a GPU sign as well.

Right now the number one reason why the game crashes is not having updated drivers.  The number two reason is GPUs overheating, and since you clearly covered the first, I'd check the second.

If that isn't the case, then we're in new territory.  Perhaps check antivirus or chkdsk for corrupted files or redownload them.  The Resurgence packs have no code and are just new levels, so if you're not playing those levels, you aren't affected by them.

Jeff
